TUCSON - Sun Tran bus drivers are hoping for justice after their co-worker, John Akers, was killed riding his bike to work.
"John was a great guy," driver Rick Hollander said. "Everybody liked him. He had a heart of gold. There's just not enough nice things we can all say about him."
Pima County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Enrique Hernandez, 24, and charged him with 2nd Degree Murder and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Serious Injury or Death.
Hernandez made his Initial Appearance in video court Wednesday night.
Akers was hit May 23 at the intersection of Irvington and Mission Roads.
"A friend was killed," Sun Tran driver Richard Weiser said. "It's a death. I hate anybody to die. I don't care for death at all."
Hernandez was stopped and questioned shortly after the incident. Detectives now believe they have gathered enough information to make an arrest.
Driver James Martin hopes the person who hit Akers will be held accountable.
"People can't go around killing people," Martin said, "and nobody pays any cost for it."
