Man is fatally shot by Avondale police officer

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - An armed man who reportedly was acting erratically inside an Avondale convenience store is dead after being shot by police.

Avondale police say the man was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital for treatment after Tuesday morning's incident and was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the man as 19-year-old Shaun Nathaniel Walters.

They say he was armed with a knife and a Taser gun when he was shot.

Police say the shooting occurred about 8 a.m. in the parking lot of a Circle K convenience store at the intersection of Avondale Boulevard and McDowell Road.

Police received a call about a man acting erratically inside the store and sent out a patrol car to the scene.

The officer wasn't injured and is on paid administrative leave while police investigate the shooting.
