Midtown fire damages warehouse, caused multiple explosions

TUCSON - A warehouse fire in midtown posed concern for the two dozen Tucson firefighters, wary of reports of several explosions that came from the fire.

Tucson Fire Department received several calls around 9 a.m. about a fire and multiple explosions in a neighborhood near Stone and West Plata, which has some industrial businesses mixed in with homes.

About three different businesses are housed in the particular spot, the fire was contained to just one section, which was being used as a personal storage area.

Firefighters were concerned because explosions kept going off as they were trying to the fire under control, which is why they went into a defensive mode.

Attacking from both sides of the storage unit and from above, taking their ladder truck to hoist a crew onto the roof to make a hole in the ceiling for ventilation.

As they started to get stuf out of the unit, they found a cannon among other things.

"I would say that that was definitely unusual, when you see a canon, hear explosions, possible gun powder. The flags go up for us," said TFD Captain Barrett Baker, adding "our job is to reduce property damage and save lives but we can't be part of that as well."

Investigators are still working to figure out what caused the fire and what the explosions came from.
