MONSOON 2013: Storm rips through Tucson

TUCSON - A quick monsoon storm ripped through the Tucson area Friday-- snapping poles, knocking out power and flooding streets.

A flash flood has stranded a teenager at Rancho Vistoso and Oracle, according to the National Weather Service. A 15-year-old was looking at the water in the wash when it trapped him on a sandy island.

The boy called 911 on his cell phone and sustained no injury, Golder Ranch Fire Department officials said.

Rural Metro Fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 4700 block of Via Molina possibly caused by lightning, Rural Metro Fire Department spokesman Cpt. Grant Cesarek said.

Van Buskirk Elementary school, near Ajo and Sixth Avenue, has wires across the parking lot trapping employees. Half the roof is ripped off and rain is getting in.

Downed power lines disrupted power for 9,000 customers in the area of Fair and Park. An update from TEP came at 3:19 p.m. that only 6,000 were still without power.

The rain had a massive dump of precipitation in the area. Rain totals in inches so far as of 3 p.m. Friday:

  • Moore and La Cholla: 1.97''
  • Saddlebrook: 1.18''
  • Irvington and Swan: 0.91''
  • Country Club and Ajo Way: 1.81''
