TUCSON - First storms of the monsoon bring record rain.

Severe thunderstorms hit the Tucson metro area starting around 2:45pm with strong winds, heavy rain and even reports of hail. Officially we recorded 0.29" at TIA breaking the previous record for June 16 which was 0.20" set in 1918. This is the first measurable rain in the bucket in 61 days going back to April 14. On top of this, the first couple weeks of the monsoon (June 15-30) only averages 0.15" so we've nearly doubled that already. Some of heaviest rain was north of Tucson with SaddleBrooke seeing 0.59". The forecast is set to dry out over the next 24-48 hours for southern Arizona. Any leftover thunderstorms on Sunday should be contained near the Arizona/New Mexico border.
