Mother calls class book "porn," files complaint

TUCSON - A mother files a complaint after seeing some "sexually explicit" words in a class book.

The complaint is about an "erotic" excerpt in Cuban-American author Cristina Garcia's critically-acclaimed novel "Dreaming Cuban"

The story is about a bond between three generations of women during the Cuban revolution.

Debbie Stoner said the language goes too far, and the Sierra Vista School district is now deciding whether to drop the common core recommended book.

"Get back to our classics that teach us some good solid ground," said Debbie Stoner.

Stoner filed the complaint when she found out her 10th grade son was reading this book in class at Buena High School.

She points out one page in particular as "porn."

"Yes. High school students that's typical. They go out and they look for things like that. I understand, but when a person in authority gives them something. That's a whole other message to the child," said Stoner.

"It's just a few sentences, but it makes a difference for a lot of people and I understand that," said Kriss Hagerl, Sierra Vista Unified School District's superintendent.

The district has formed a committee that will decide whether to take the book off the shelves permanently or come up with a compromise.

"They will have a meeting where the public anyone opposed or for the book can come and give their view of things," said Hagerl.

The author of the book, Cristina Garcia, told News 4 Tucson she would be willing to travel to Sierra Vista to talk to the district and the community about her book and why she doesn't believe it should be pulled.

The district's superintendent said if the committee allows the book in the curriculum, parents would be able to opt their children out of reading the book, and there would be an alternative.

Deborah Caldwell Stone, with the American Library Association told News 4 Tucson she hopes the school doesn't ban the book.

She also said this is the first report of any challenge they've received on "Dreaming in Cuban."
