JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Police have identified the murder suspect who authorities say fatally shot a Jackson, Miss., police detective at the department's headquarters and who himself was killed.
The Jackson Police Department said Det. Eric Smith was questioning 23-year-old Jeremy Powell in an interview room late Thursday afternoon when officers heard gunshots and then found both men dead.
Police said Powell was in the process of being arrested for the Monday killing of Christopher Alexander.
The 40-year-old Smith had been with the department since 1995 and was assigned to the Robbery-Homicide Division. Both had been shot several times.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
