TUCSON - Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Arizona. Most people choose a gun. Our suicide rates, regardless of age, are higher than the national average. And, In 2010, there were twice as many suicides as there were homicides; 1,070 suicides to 404 homicides.

This may seem shocking to some people, but mothers like Terry DuBay aren't shocked by much anymore. Terry's daughter, Diane, took her life at the age of 18. Terry says, Diane showed no signs of depression. Her high school friends had recently moved away, splintering her support group, but Diane appeared fine. She was busy, working toward a career in the culinary arts until she had a really bad day. Diane chose a permanent solution to her temporary problem.

Terry tells Kristi's Kids, "You do think you know people. You think, even though you love em' with all your heart, you know them inside and out, but you don't." UA juvenile behavior researcher Stephen Russell, PhD, says there's a general disconnect between kids and adults. Russell is a Professor at the Norton School Family and Consumer Science. He says, "It used to be, you pretty much know what's being watched on television and you could sort of tell, among kids, what was going on at school. But these days, the world really is much more complicated."

This Sunday, October 7th there will be a walk, to prevent suicide. The "Out of the Darkness" community walk at Reid Park.
