Nitrogen gas leak reported at Ariz. Intel plant

CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) - A nitrogen leak at the Intel plant in Chandler has been stopped, but fire department officials say dozens of people were treated for breathing difficulties and eye irrigations.

The leak was reported Saturday morning at the semiconductor manufacturing plant near Dobson and Queen Creek roads.

Chandler Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Dwiggins says a total of 43 people were treated following the leak. Eleven of them were transported to the hospital, and all were in stable condition.

He says the chief complaints involved difficulties breathing and skin and eye irrigation.

Dwiggins says the leak was under control by 8:15 a.m. He says it's not immediately clear what caused the leak and that Intel plans an investigation.

A spokesman for the plant did not return messages seeking comment.
