Editor's note: The following is a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection:
NOGALES - A 30-year-old Mexican national was arrested today for attempting to smuggle $20,520 in unreported U.S. currency into the United States through the SENTRI lane at the Dennis DeConcini Port.
Customs and Border Protection officers conducting inspections at the Trusted Traveler lane selected a vehicle for further inspection. During the search, officers located stacks of currency in a pouch on Ortiz's lap. The vehicle and cash were processed for seizure. The
man was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigation.
SENTRI, part of a trusted-traveler program, allows members access to a dedicated commuter lane that expedites the inspection process for low-risk travelers. Qualification for the program requires an extensive background check and in-person interview.
