Tucson, AZ - The Pima Community College softball team fell into the loser's bracket but recovered to win two games on Friday at the Canyons Complex in St. George, UT.
The Aztecs must win three in a row on Saturday to claim the NJCAA National Championship and it begins against No. 2 Salt Lake Community College (Utah) at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. Tucson time) If they win they must beat Wallace State Community College (Alabama) twice at noon (11 a.m. Tucson time) and 2 p.m. (1 p.m. Tucson time)
The No. 5 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 1 seed Butler Community College (Kansas) 6-3 in their third game of the day. Pima struck in the second inning when Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run home run to make it 2-0. In the third inning, Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) hit a two-run homer of her own to make it 4-0. Danielle Stensby (Buena HS) hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to bring in Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) to make it 5-0. Butler scored a run in the top of the sixth but the Aztecs responded in the bottom of the inning when Gemma Contreras (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI single to score Victoria Mariscal (Douglas HS). Butler scored two runs in the seventh but a flyout to Contreras ended the game.
Alvarez pitched a complete-game giving up three runs (one earned) off 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Aztecs lost to No. 8 Wallace State 8-6 in their first game of the day. Alvarez hit a solo homer in the first inning to put the Aztecs up early but Wallace scored one run in the second and six runs in the fifth to pull away. Pima fought back with three runs in the sixth when Ortiz hit a solo home run and a Mariscal hit drove in Carpenter and Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS). Ortiz finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
In its second game of the day, Pima responded in a big way defeating No. 11 Lake Land College (Illinois) 13-3 in five innings. Alvarez hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning. She also had an RBI double in the second inning finishing 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) hit a two-run RBI double in Pima's five-run fourth inning. She finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Mariscal went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Carpenter finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Comeaux was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.
