PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix woman and her boyfriend have been arrested on suspicion of child abuse in the death of the woman's 4-year-old daughter.
Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes says officers responded to an apartment Sunday, and the child wasn't breathing. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The girl's mother, 19-year-old Melissa Centeno, says she hit the girl in the stomach Friday night and that her daughter had complained of stomach pain.
Centeno's boyfriend, 22-year-old Sergio Ortiz, told authorities he had spanked the girl over the weekend and that her face was bruised because she fell in the bathtub.
Police says the number of bruises and the location of them on her body weren't consistent with Ortiz's story.
Police say the two could face additional charges pending the results of an autopsy.
