Pinal County schools prepare for mass shootings

KPNX- An active shooter training exercise was held Wednesday in Arizona.

The exercise trains law enforcement and emergency personnel on how to neutralize school shootings and stop them from happening.

Here's the scenario.

It's early morning and school's already in session at Poston Butte High School in Pinal County, Arizona.

Then the sound no community wants to hear, gunfire turning a quiet morning into chaos.

Deputies search the halls for two shooters while students scream in pain.

Emergency personnel try to treat as many victims as they can. Not knowing where the gunmen are.

This is an active shooter exercise.

The students are actors.

"What we want to do is create an environment in which teachers, in which principals, and everyone, including deputies, ambulance, emts, fire, everybody respond at the best possible decision making that they can arrive at," said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.

The past decade of mass shootings has changed the way law enforcement reacts.

While the exercise is dramatic and for some scary, Babeu says it's necessary.

"When an event like this god forbid ever occurs in our county or somewhere else, that we're going to respond as efficiently as possible."
