TUCSON - A dog belonging to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was mauled by a pitbull during the service of a search warrant Thursday morning.

Borra, 4, was taken to a veterinarian clinic for emergency treatment, according to Carlos Canino, spokesman for ATF in Southern Arizona.

He received stitches for puncture wounds and lacerations, Canino said. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Borra is a tactical K-9 for a Dallas based ATF Special Response Team, Canino said. The team was in town searching a property near Mission and Silverlake Roads.

The search was part of a joint ATF and Tucson Police Department investigation into gang activity, according to Canino.

The pitbull broke loose and attacked Borra during the investigation, Canino said. Agents tried to pull the pitbull off of Borra, but eventually had to shoot the dog in order to save their K-9 partner.

Borra was discharged from the vet and returned to Dallas Thursday afternoon, Canino said.
