Police say Phoenix man killed wife over HIV fear

GOODYEAR (AP) - Goodyear, Ariz., police are still sorting out the story of a man charged with fatally stabbing his wife and adult son.

Police say 64-year-old Eugene Maraventano told them he feared his wife had cancer or that he gave her HIV from prostitutes he slept with. They haven't been able to confirm the illnesses.

According to court records, Maraventano told police he attempted suicide after killing his 63-year-old wife, Janet, and their 27-year-old son, Brian. Maraventano said he feared what would become of their son after his suicide, explaining that his son played video games all day and had no girlfriend or job.

Maraventano was treated at a hospital for injuries he suffered during his suicide attempts and is now in jail on $2 million bail. It's unclear whether Maraventano has an attorney.
