Police: Tucson clerk shoots handicapped panhandler

TUCSON - A clerk at a convenience store is in jail after police say he shot a man in a wheelchair.

It happened at the Quik Mart around 5:30pm Saturday on South 4th Avenue and East 22nd Street.

Tucson Police Sergeant Chris Widmer say the man in the wheelchair was aggressively panhandling in the parking lot.

The clerk, 43-year-old Christopher Lindsey, went out to confront him.

Widmer say the panhandler then grabbed a windshield wiper squeegee, but Lindsey hit him with a pistol.

Widmer say the panhandler then made a verbal threat and Lindsey shot him.

He has non life-threatening injuries.

Lindsey was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault.
