Powdered alcohols are not approved yet

Don't expect powdered alcohol to hit store shelves anytime soon.

A product called "Palcohol" gained widespread media attention in recent days after it was reported that the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved the powered alcohol, including vodka and rum varieties.

Creator Mike Phillips says the powder has up to 60 percent alcohol by volume. Palcohol transforms a shot of vodka or rum into a discreet pouch of powder. But the product does have its critics.

A spokesman from the company says the approval was for the labeling of the product, which is different from actualy approval for consumer use.

"We don't have an expected approval date as label approval can vary widely," the message said.

Critics say that's a disaster waiting to happen. Earlier versions of the companies website had claims that the product could be snorted. Phillips has since toned down the website since its approval.

Palcohol is expected to hit shelves this fall. It will be available in powdered vodka or rum and four different cocktail flavors, according to their website.
