Prescott 'Doce' fire at 2,000 acres

PRESCOTT, AZ - A wind-whipped wildfire has grown to more than 600 acres in northern Arizona and forced the evacuation of at least 10 homes west of Prescott.

But Yavapai County officials say the so-called Doce fire is burning away from populated area and there's no immediate threat to structures.

County sheriff's officials say the wildfire began midday Tuesday near the Doce Pit about eight miles northwest of Prescott.

Wind gusts of up to 22 mph pushed the fire from 20 acres to about 200 within an hour.

Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn says about 30 residents in 10 homes in the Granite Basin Recreation Area were evacuated and 150 other homes were on stand-by.

He says 15 hikers in the area also were evacuated as heavy white smoke filled the air and could be seen by people as far away as Flagstaff.
