Residents upset over proposed development in Tanque Verde

TANQUE VERDE - A developer planning to build homes on the east side has people living in the area fuming.

The plan would bring 49 homes to a neighborhood near Houghton and Tanque Verde. The developers want to build along both sides of the Agua Caliente Wash but neighbors aren't so keen on the idea, arguing that it would change the dynamic of the area which resembles a rural area at the edges of the metro.

"It's just that more and more of Tucson is disappearing and once it's gone, it's gone. You can't put it back," said Allison Sprinkles, who lives nearby.

The WLB Group is the developer behind the project and is petitioning the county's planning and zoning commission to make way for the residential development. The topic will go before the commission on July 31.

However, neighbors worry about whether it's a proper place to build homes because the wash has a history of flooding.

Other concerns circle around the environment, animal life and added congestion to the neighborhood.

Rachel Bliss, one resident said this type of development could change the characteristic of the community.

"Keep it as a suburban ranch zoning... sure if they want to put in a couple houses there that's fine with me... but not house, house, house... cookie cutter neighborhood," Bliss said.

The developers still has several steps before the project becomes reality, that includes getting approval from the Pima County Zoning Commission and ultimately the Board of Supervisors. Those meetings are scheduled for the end of the month.

News 4 Tucson reached out to the developers -- they did not return our calls.
