PEORIA - A Maricopa County sheriff's deputy is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot, and a man sought in that shooting has been found dead.

The deputy was shot multiple times in a Peoria lot early Tuesday after he encountered a man. The man's former girlfriend had earlier called authorities to voice concern about the man.

Witnesses said they heard shots fired and saw the deputy on the ground in the parking lot.

Peoria police later spotted the man sought in the shooting of the deputy and authorities say the man shot at officers who returned fire.

SWAT team officers ultimately found the man dead in a vehicle. It's not immediately known whether how he was killed.

No identities have been released.
