St. Louis Arch furlough

(KSDK) The federal government shutdown will lead to the furlough of 75 local workers Tuesday as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial - which comprises the Gateway Arch and old courthouse - shuts down.

The parks service says the closure's impact will expand beyond the furloughed workers.

About 6,500 people visit the arch on a weekend day, and those people spend money at local restaurants and businesses.

"We won't be here answering phones, we won't be answering email, and we'll basically go dark," Ann Honious with the National Parks Service said.

Though the arch is closed, people will still be able to walk the grounds. About 30 employees will continue to work in order to ensure that the park is ensure.
