TUCSON - The Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona has an alert for Tucson residents.
Associated Publishers Network is a "subscription renewal" outfit claiming a Las Vegas address.
It's has racked up 112 complaints from around the country - including Tucson.
Consumers tell BBB they received renewal notices from APN for publications they currently subscribe to, but after they mailed renewal checks to APN their subscriptions ended, and they were told by the newspapers or magazines that they were subscribed to that the publications have no working relationship with APN.
Consumers who contacted APN tell BBB that in most cases their calls and emails were not returned, and consumer who were able to speak with an APN representative say they were still unable to get a refund.
Publishers have taken notice, and records show the New York Times has filed a complaint with BBB.
Dow Jones & Company, which operates The Wall Street Journal, has issued its own fraud alert to respond to mounting complaints.
They say that APN claims to do business on behalf of The Wall Street Journal using various names: United Publisher's Clearing House, National Magazine Services, Orbital Publishing, and Publisher's Billing Exchange.
Each of these companies shares the same address with Associated Publishers Network, which is 850 S. Boulder Hwy., Henderson, Nevada or a P.O. Box in Oregon.
Two Tucson consumers have filed complaints against APN as well, saying that they were duped into paying the phony subscription renewal fee along with so many other consumers around the country.
BBB advises customers to check the payment address of subscription solicitors, avoid third party billers, and to not provide questionable agents with financial information.
If you feel that you have received a fraudulent renewal invoice, file a complaint with BBB.
You may also want to report false solicitations to the Arizona Attorney General, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
