TUCSON - A 30-year-old man is dead after an officer-involved shooting that stemmed from a 911 call he made to tell police that he was a combat veteran who was suicidal and wanted to be shot by an officer, according to police.

Officers responded to the call made by Dustin Wernli at an an eastside apartment complex near Harrison and Broadway on Tuesday night.

Police spoke with Wernli for about 15 minutes outside, with at least two of their officers trained for handling crisis situations, said Sgt. Maria Hawk.

Hawk said Officer Jayson Thompson shot Wernli when he reached for a handgun, ignoring orders from officers.

"The officers were giving him repeated commands to actually not touch that weapon and to not do anything else ...He did not comply with those commands," Hawk told News 4 Tucson.

Wernli was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries less than an hour later. His next of kin have been notified.

Thompson is a 12-year veteran of TPD and has perviously fired his weapon in the line of duty. He has been put on paid leave as part of standard protocol.
