TUCSON - Sunlink workers are preparing for the official launch of the Tucson Modern Streetcar.
The project was approved by voters back in 2006 but there are only days left until passengers hop aboard the trains and take to the rails.
The official launch of the streetcar is set for July 25th. Sunlink will offer free rides to the public that entire weekend.
Shellie Ginn, the project manager for the streetcar, said the team is fully ready for the launch of the rail system.
"Everybody that's worked on this project is excited. They're exhausted. They're stressed out but they are really looking forward to a great opening and hopefully seamless and successful opening," Ginn said.
To many, the launch of the rail signals the first in an effort to expand accessibility of mass transportation to the public.
"It's really important if you want to have a multi-modal transportation network to have lots of different options available ... so the street car is a great and essential leg to accessing things on foot on bike and also tying into existing bus networks," said Emily Yetman of the Living Streets Alliance.
