KIRKLAND, WA - Sunnyside softball entered extra innings once again, but came up short to a powerful Eagle Pass, Texas team on Tuesday morning.
With the game tied at eight after seven innings, Texas poured in six runs to begin the seventh. Sunnyside was unable to rally in the bottom half of the inning. The loss drops the local Tucson team to 1-2 in pool play. Only four of the five teams will advance from pool play to the actual tournament.
Arlett Arreola hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, bringing Sunnyside within a run at 6-5. Yannira Acuna scored on a past ball later in the inning to tie the game.
Texas took a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Sunnyside rallied once again. Arreola and Acuna scored the tying runs to send the game into extras.
But the eighth inning belonged to the Southwest team from Texas. Three consecutive hits netted four runs, boosting the lead to 12-8. Texas added two more for the 14-8 advantage. Sunnyside mustered one hit in the final frame, leaving the runner on base. They stranded 22 runners according to the stats via Game Changer.
Amaya Turner and Acuna each had multi-hit games for Sunnyside. Angel Sallas, Andrea Escarcega, Danesia Carpio and Arreola chipped in with one hit apiece.
Sunnyside will face MexiCali (Baja, California) in its final game of pool play. In all likelihood, the team will need to win to qualify for bracket play. The game is set for 11:00am Wednesday morning.
