KIRKLAND, WA - Sunnyside scored three runs in the second inning and held off a late MexiCali run to earn a 3-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The Tucson program finishes pool play with a 2-2 record and will qualify for bracket play.
Sunnyside had only six hits and two RBIs but the defense came up big in a must-win contest. Angel Sallas and Arlett Arreola each collected two hits in the game.
Alexandria Tapia connected the first RBI for Sunnyside, a single to right field that allowed Arreola to score from second base. Viviana Orantez swung at strike three, but the MexiCali catcher dropped the ball allowing Orantez to reach first. Tapia scored on the play for a 2-0 lead.
Yannira Acuna continued her impressive play with a ground ball single to right field which brought home Sallas for the final Sunnyside run.
MexiCali made a run in the seventh inning beginning with Lindsey Roldan's single to start the inning. The next at-bat, Lizbeth Lugo hit a home run to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of Sunnyside. The threat ended when MexiCali would ground out, strike out and fly out to end the game.
While the bracket has yet to be officially determined, it appears Sunnyside will qualify with one of the four spots from Pool B. They will likely earn the 2-seed or 3-seed pending the final game of pool play.
