Survey finds teens may be losing interest in top social media sites

TUCSON- It seems every teenager has a Facebook. But, many of them also have Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, and Tumblr accounts. So which site is the favorite among teens?

At Amphi High the answer is clear.

"I only use Facebook," said one student.

With over a billion users worldwide not having a Facebook is just not cool!

"It's really social. It's a platform where you connect not just for your personal social needs but now it's becoming professional social networking," said social media expert, Dr. Sudha Ram.

In a recent study of over 5,000 teenagers only 33 percent of teens listed their favorite social media site as Facebook. That's about ten percent less from the previous study last year. In fact all of the top ten sites saw a decline, except Pinterest seeing a very small jump. There are simply more options.

"Tumblr, sure still has all of the same content but it's presented in a more mature manner. I think there is more thought on Tumblr," said student, Wyatt Jameson.

Whatever their reason might be it is important to remember this study focuses on a small fraction of Facebook's users, and teenagers are actually not the key demographic.

"There's about 600 million people who are active every day. Also, about 86 percent are in the age group from 18 to 29," said Ram.

What the report may reveal is a necessity for major sites like Facebook to recognize the demands of potential long lasting consumers.

"I think all of these companies should be thinking about their competition and how to keep people coming back. Rather than just offering one or two capabilities or functionality they should really think of a comprehensive set of features that would attract many different groups of people," said Ram.

So where are these former Facebook fanatics going? The survey gave teens the option of writing in their favorite site. Wanelo, Vine, Snapchat, Kik and 4chan were the top write-ins.
