SUSD board agrees to buyout superintendent's contract

TUCSON - The Sunnyside Unified School District will buyout the superintendent's contract for nearly $500,000.

The governing board came to the decision after meeting for nearly eight hours in executive session Monday. Shortly before midnight, board member Eva Dong announced the district would buyout the remaining 18 months on Dr. Manuel Isquierdo's contract for $499,500. About 40 people were waiting to hear the board's decision.

The meeting was organized last minute, in part, by two recalled board members Louis Gonzales and Bobby Garcia.

Last Tuesday night, Dr. Isquierdo went on the record and told the board he did not want a buyout. He said he was prepared to work with the new board, despite saying the opposite four weeks earlier.

Tuesday morning the Pima County Board of Supervisors will declare the official results of a May recall election targeting Gonzales and Garcia. That evening, elected board members Beki Quintero and Eric Giffin will be sworn in. Just over four thousand ballots were cast in that recall election.

The new board will soon select an interim superintendent until they can hire a permanent replacement for Dr. Isquierdo, said Giffin. The board will likely appoint a current staff member to serve as interim.
