MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Bond is set at $150,000 for a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run death of homeless man riding an adult-sized tricycle in Mesa.
Matthew S. McIver was arraigned Wednesday. He was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Court documents released Wednesday show the 37-year-old McIver told Mesa police he drank three pint-sized beers at a Mesa bar before driving.
McIver told police that he panicked after hitting something on the highway on Aug. 13, but didn't know what it was.
Police say McIver's car has been impounded as part of the investigation of the accident that killed 68-year-old Richard Welck.
McIver doesn't have an attorney yet. A status conference in his case is scheduled Aug. 27 with a preliminary hearing two days later.
