Thieves caught stealing ATM in Oro Valley

ORO VALLEY, Arz. - Two men are behind bars, suspected of trying to steal an ATM from a Chase bank in Oro Valley. However, an alert patrol officer put the brakes on the heist.

Paul Cox and Levar Mariner are charged with theft, criminal damage and possession of burglary tools. Police say the men are suspected in several other crimes all across Maricopa county. The ATM weighs 2,500 lbs.

They say 35-year-old Mariner and 46-year-old Cox were on their way to lifting the ATM when they were stopped in their tracks. Donna Curran, a Chase customer, says, "Does that say something about their desperation or their intelligence? I don't know."

Curran was walking along the path near the Chase bank when she came across Oro Valley Police officers who had a piece of equipment with them. "I thought they were looking for snakes or something, I asked them, 'What are you doing? What are you looking for?' as they were looking over the edge of the railing," Curran said. "They were looking for evidence. They were talking about tire tracks."

Police say on November 1, they received a tip from the Gilbert police department to be on the lookout for the suspects who were headed to Oro Valley. While on patrol, an OVP officer became suspicious when he noticed ATM cameras were spray-painted. Lt. Kara Riley says, "He then exited his vehicle and began checking the area and located two suspects running across Oracle and jumping a fence."

The suspects will appear tonight in video court here in Pima County, but they still face multiple charges in Maricopa County.
