TUCSON - A Tucson 6th-grader inspired to help students at Sandy Hook Elementary School has organized a local book drive.
10-year-old Thomas Derrig is the Student Council President at Richardson Elementary School and has already collected hundreds of dollars worth of books for his "Smiles Across the Miles" Book Drive. The Barnes & Noble at the Foothills Mall donated $400 worth of books toward Thomas' efforts and a letter went out to parents in the Flowing Wells School District, urging classmates to join the cause.
Thomas and other members of the Richardson Student Council hope the books will provide Sandy Hook students with a means for escape and happiness through reading. They plan on sending the books to Newtown, Connecticut in January, just as Sandy Hook students settle into their new school and classrooms.
New story books, suitable for K - 4th grade students are being collected at Richardson Elementary School, 6901 N. Camino de la Tierra. Monetary donations toward purchasing more books are also being accepted at Tucson area Wells Fargo branches in the Smiles Across the Miles account.
