Tucson couple OK after gas explosion in home

TUCSON - A husband and wife in their 70s are OK Thursday after a gas explosion in their home.

Northwest Fire crews responded to the home in the 4400 Block of North Obetka Avenue just after 12:30 p.m. and saw heavy smoke coming from the home. The windows had been blown out and there was "significant" gaps between the home's walls and the roof, Northwest Fire spokesman Adam Goldberg said.

Twenty firefighters, 3 engines and a ladder company responded to the fire.

Crews were able to put the fire out within 15 minutes, Goldberg said. A thermal imaging camera was used to make sure the roof fire had been fully extinguished.

The couple was able to safely get out of the house and sustained no injury, Goldberg said. The damage to the home was extensive although estimates of the damage weren't immediately available.

The Red Cross and Northwest Fire District's Community Assistance team are helping the family with housing and needs.
