TUCSON - A Tucsonan has fond memories of Bonnie Franklin, a TV star who just died from pancreatic cancer.
Franklin was the main character in "One Day at a Time." Pat Harrington Jr. costarred as Schneider the superintendent.
His son, Pat Harrington III, lives in Tucson.
"She'd see you from 100 feet away and she'd walk right up to you with a big smile on her face," Harrington III said. "She was just sweet as can be."
Harrington III also had pancreatic cancer when he heard about Franklin's declining health.
"Very sad," Harrington III said. "I knew she was sick. I heard about it in September. My father actually was the one who told me that she was sick with pancreatic cancer, and I just felt very, very bad for her."
Harrington III just learned he appeared to beat his cancer about 3 weeks ago.
"I was fortunate," he said. "I was extremely fortunate."
He suffered for weeks before doctors diagnosed him. He wants to spread the message that other people need to get checked early.
