TUCSON - The Tucson Police Department is investigating several reports of police impersonators pulling citizens over during a 10 day period.
The incidents took place between June 10 and June 20, 2013, according to Tucson Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Maria Hawke.
TPD has recovered the vehicle, which they believe was used in each incident, Hawke said. The car was outfitted with low profile red and blue lights above the dashboard and additional lighting in the rear window.
The Ford Crown Victoria did not have any police markings nor did it have any lights on the rooftop, Hawke added.
TPD is looking for any other people who may have been pulled over by at least one person in a car matching the description above, Hawke said. The subjects were not dressed in a police uniform, but may have identified themselves as either a police officer or a member of another law enforcement or government agency. No citations would have been given by any potential suspects.
Detectives are asking that anyone stopped under these circumstances anywhere in the Tucson area to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
If citizens ever have any doubt about the identity of a police officer, there are a few precautions they may take.
Citizens have the right to ask members of law enforcement for an identification card, which they are required to provide, Hawke said. The card will have a photograph of the officer along with the name of their law enforcement agency, and badge number, Hawke added. Citizens may also call 911 in order to confirm that they are dealing with real members of law enforcement.
