Tucson property manager evicting tenants to renovate

TUCSON - Eight families from a Tucson apartment complex are facing evictions.

The property manager said they owe the landlord money from rent.

One woman said she was in rehab when a notice was sent, and said she only needs time to collect money for the payment but is still facing eviction.

"Going into rehab and coming out to this, I'm just--I don't know what to do," said Sherri Sharp.

Sharp lives at Palms at Prince Apartment complex.

"I'm 50 years old. This is all terrifying to me," said Sharp.

She's all packed but with nowhere to go.

"I just want them to save these families. I don't want to see these families go to the street. I don't want to see myself and my dogs to go to the street. I don't know what to do," said Sharp.

She claims she is trying to get the money but the new manager won't work with her.

Manager Michael Funkhouser said tenants had plenty of time to make their payments.

Those on the eviction list were given a month's notice requesting them out by Saturday.

"Nobody has come and given us rent, so we're doing what we have to do legally," said Funkhouser.

Funkhouser said between back rent and property damages, some tenants owe a lot.

"$1,400, $1,000, $925, $1,000, $2,000," he said. "Come Monday, our attorney will be filing the evictions in court and we will have a constable out here next month to remove them from the property."

Some tenants are moving out on their own.

"I'm one of the ones that ain't getting evicted. I feel that I have a right to pay the back money because I did live here, but it was kind of hard when there were so many different managers. There are no leases," said Angela Martinez.

Martinez said she just wants to get away from here.

"Just the people coming off the street, the drugs," she said.
She said the new management is trying to take care of that problem.

"I'm thankful that they found somebody that would do it," said Martinez.

As for Sharp, she's waiting for a check to arrive to pay rent.

She just hopes it's not too late.
