TUCSON - Tucson Water is ready for multiple nights of freezing temperatures.
In 2011, they had pipes break at pumping facilities leaving customers without service.
"The freezes that we had in 2011 were definitely unprecedented," Tucson Water spokesman Fernando Molina said. "It had been over 100 years since we had experienced temperatures of that nature."
The damages cost about $450,000 to repair.
So many customers' pipes broke, the biggest consumption day of 2011 was in the winter.
Tucson Water does not have problems with big pipes, just smaller ones at their pump stations. In the past months, they have wrapped them with insulation. Molina was not immediately sure how much that cost.
"I'm sure that the cost of weather proofing was a lot less than the cost of doing the repairs," he said, "and so the same thing applies to homeowners."
Tucson Water is keeping their call center open all weekend for emergencies. They are open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Their phone number is (520)791-4133.
