TUCSON - The Tucson Unified School District is navigating through some tough times. Going into the 2013 school year the district expects to lose at least another $6 million in state funding and close to $4 million in stimulus money. With that in mind, the district is kicking off a round of presentations to educate the public about its projected 2013 budget.
The district's Chief Financial Officer, Yousef Awwad, says the projected $253 million budget for 2013 will not be as tight as years before but the reductions are still there. Meantime, enrollment is still down by 2-3 percent each year, that is not helping funding issues either.
Wednesday night's meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Catalina Magnet High School. Awwad says he is hoping to show the community how much money the district has, where it comes from and how it needs to be used.
"Even though we may appear to have a big budget, I want them to know there are limitations on these line items and it's not a free for all, it's not very discretionary in nature," said Awwad. "There are extreme limitations on where you can spend your money."
The public will have a chance to ask their own questions at the end of each event. The schedule is below.
