The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Thursday that two University of Arizona men's basketball student-athletes, Nick Johnson and Aaron Gordon, were named to the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T Mid-season 30.
Johnson and Gordon represent the PAC-12. They are two out of three players on the mid-season list. Arizona is one out of six schools to include multiple players on the mid-season list. Iowa State, Kansas, Michigan State, Syracuse and Wichita State are the other five schools who have multiple representatives.
Johnson leads the Wildcats with an average of 15.9 points per game. He became the 48th player in Arizona history who managed to reached the 1,000-point mark this season.
Johnson was named Most Outstanding Player at the 2013 NIT Season Tip-Off was also named a mid-season candidate for both the John R. Wooden Award and Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Gordon is both Arizona and PAC-12 leading freshman who has an average of 8.0 rebounds per game. He ranks second on the UA roster at 11.8 points per outgoing. Gordon has a team-high six double-doubles on the year and currently ranks seventh on Arizona's freshman rebounds list and eight on the program's freshman blocks chart.
Gordon was named USA Basketball 2013 Male Athlete of the Year in January. He received a gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championship for the U.S. squad and individual tournament Most Valuable Player accolades. Gordon was named to the NIT Season Tip-Off-All-Tournament in November.
