TUCSON - A woman who allegedly crossed the border illegally with her husband, then injured herself in a remote area of the Baboquivari Mountains, was rescued Friday morning by a Blackhawk helicopter and rescue agents who conducted a rope extraction.

A Guatemalan man called 911 and said he and his wife had illegally crossed the border two days before, and she had fallen about 45-feet and was unable to stand, according to a news release from Customs and Border Protection.

Within an hour, a Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue unit and the Office of Air and Marine coordinated the mission using a Blackhawk helicopter, which arrived at the scene, about halfway up Baboquivari Peak, southwest of Tucson, the release stated. With terrain too rough to land, BORSTAR agents deployed from the helicopter and hiked to the reach the couple.

Agents determined the woman might have a leg fracture, and decided to use a Helicopter Rappel Suspension Technique to rescue her, the release stated. A separate Blackhawk with the proper equipment arrived; OAM agents and BORSTAR agents successfully extracted the woman and took her to an EMS crew that was standing by to transport her to a local hospital.
