Who killed Jose Morales 25 years ago?

TUCSON - For 25 years the investigation into the murder of José Morales has been sitting on the shelf at the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Now, detectives are hoping you might be able to give them new leads.

Detective Luis Cornidez says, Morales "Died a violent death from multiple gunshots."

Investigators say a man collecting aluminum cans along old Nogales highway found Morales' body on the side of the road on November 19, 1988. The Department of Public Safety was called because it appeared that Morales was the victim of a hit-and-run. After a closer look, investigators discovered he'd been shot.

News 4 obtained the crime scene photos. Multiple bullet casings were found around the body. Detectives say Morales had been drinking beer at his home with two men the night before his body was found. One of the investigators spoke with one of the men. "But the other individual hasn't been found and we don't know who he is, we have not been able to identify him."

An artist came up with a composite drawing of what the man looked like 25 years ago. "This is possibly a Hispanic male about 5'5" weighing about 130 to 140 lbs. He was last seen with our victim."

So it's possible that man could provide detectives the information they need to solve this 25 year old case and give the family of José Morales closure.

In 2009, detectives sent off whatever items they had to a lab for DNA analysis. It came back negative.
