TUCSON - Drivers beware, the I-10 widening between Ruthrauff and Prince begins this week.

Crews will return one week later to apply the new top layer of rubberized asphalt on the westbound lanes.

Signage will be posted for drivers not to follow haul trucks exiting the highway into the work zone.

Drivers should slow down, be aware of construction activities, and merge safely in the work zone. The posted speed limit will be 45 mph through the project for the paving operation.

The final rubberized asphalt paving is part of a $76.4 million project to widen I-10 between Ruthrauff and Prince roads that began in September 2011. The project upgraded a two-plus-mile section of I-10 by increasing capacity, reducing congestion and improving traffic flow on this highly traveled corridor in Tucson. In addition, the newly reconstructed Prince Road traffic interchange, which now carries traffic over Union Pacific Railroad, reopened in March.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
