SCOTTSDALE - Alex McMahon is already poised to become the number one golfer on the University of Arizona men's team this season. But Saturday McMahon added an early win to his senior year. McMahon won the prestigious 90th Arizona Men's State Amateur golf tournament.
McMahon fired a 6-under-par 138 (72-66) to earn the top seed in the tournament. He then beat Michael Martin by opening a three hole lead with only two holes to play.
"This is a really proud moment for me," McMahon said. "It's a sign that I'm on the right track and getting better. I played the same tournament last year and lost in the third round. So to go in turn and turn it around like that is a tribute to how much I've progressed. I'm really proud of how I played this whole week."
McMahon and the Wildcats are scheduled to open the 2014 season on September 8 in California.
