Worker at Mesa preschool accused of child abuse

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - An employee at a Mesa preschool has been accused of child abuse after police found a 2-year-old girl restrained in a sleeping area.

Mesa police say 22-year-old Lauren Miller was booked into jail Thursday night for suspicion of two counts of child abuse and two counts of unlawful imprisonment.

Miller was arraigned Friday on the charges and ordered held on $2,700 bond. She doesn't have an attorney yet.

A status conference for Miller's case is scheduled for Oct. 24 with a preliminary hearing four days later.

Police say the toddler didn't need medical attention and was turned over to her parents.

KPHO-TV says the Cholla Montessori School received 28 citations from the Arizona Department of Economic Security in 2011 and 2012 combined for issues including hygiene, staffing and paperwork discrepancies.
