TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a wrong-way driver killed in a Phoenix-area head-on collision that also fatally injured an off-duty Mesa police officer.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday identified the wrong-way driver as 42-year-old Raul Silva Corona of Phoenix.
It's not yet known whether Corona was impaired. Authorities are awaiting results of toxicology tests.
Corona collided with Mesa Police Officer Brandon Mendoza after driving 35 miles in the wrong direction on three freeways early Monday morning. At one point, a police officer had slowed traffic and tried to ram the SUV driven by Corona, but Corona swerved and continued on.
Authorities say Mendoza was on his way home from work when he was killed.
A candlelight vigil for Mendoza was planned Tuesday night at police headquarters.
