TUCSON - Ammunition is getting harder to find on store shelves.

Less expensive, target-shooting ammo is harder to find than self-defense and hunting rounds.

Second Amendment Sports has quite a bit of ammunition, but it is mostly the expensive varieties.

"Bread and butter stuff that everybody likes to shoot and have fun with," said store owner Matt Janes. "That's the hardest stuff to get right now."

The hardest caliber to find is .223. That is the most popular rifle cartridge in America, according to Tommy Rompel at Black Weapons Armory, a local gun store.

Second Amendment had 4 boxes Wednesday night, but they were almost $40 each.

Rompel said people are afraid lawmakers will try to restrict ammunition along with guns.

"It is a real concern," he said. "It is a real threat to our freedoms, and people have legitimate concerns and fears about what the government's doing."

He said people are also legitimately concerned about their safety.

"You have to be able to protect yourself," Rompel said, "and more people are realizing that it's not the job of the cops to protect themselves. It's their own responsibility."

There was a similar shortage 4 years ago when President Obama was first elected.

"It's the same thing now, but faster, harder and worse," Janes said. "It got ugly real fast."
