NOGALES - A man actively digging a tunnel was arrested by Mexican authorities Friday, according to a release from US Customs and Border Protection. 

A bi-national border sweep in the area lead to the discovery of the tunnel, which extended five feet into the US side but did not breech the surface, the release detailed.

A specialized team of agents known as the Border Enforcement Security Task Force, of BEST, lead the investigation on the American side. The BEST teams "disrupt, identify and dismantle" criminals trying to exploit US borders, the release said.

There are 34 BEST units deployed across the country, covering seaports and both northern and southern border regions.
