Posted 8:34 PM 7/20/2013 : Firefighters rescued 3 children trapped in the wash
TUCSON - Northwest Fire District firefighters rescued three children who were playing in the Rillito River Saturday.
A 12 year-old, a 10 year-old, and an 8 year-old told crews they were playing in the wash when there was no water flowing. The area only got about .04 inches of rain.
They said a "wall of water" came down suddenly, trapping them in the middle of the wash.
A rescue crew of three Technical rescue team members suited up and made entry into the wash, performing a shallow water crossing to reach the kids.
The team was able to reach the children and put personal floatation devices on them.
The rescue team brought all three back to the south bank of the river without injury.
The parents of all of the kids were on scene and reunited after a brief evaluation by Northwest Fire paramedics.
Capt. Ryder Hartley with the Northwest Fire District warned not to underestimate washes.
"If it's not raining where you're at, but it's raining back up in the mountains," Hartley said, "that water's going to be down here in about 20 minutes, half an hour. So if you have kids or anybody else who might be down in the wash, that's something to remember."
