TUCSON - Gas prices in Tucson have reached extraordinary heights recently. AAA Arizona says in the past week prices have jumped 18 cents and 52 cents in the last month.

Kitty Neubauer said she's noticed the price spike, "well they like to go up and down like a yoyo. Lately it seems like we're going more up than down."

Neubauer said she and her husband have been trying to plan accordingly, "we do try to conserve a little bit and make our trips all at one time to save on gas."

Fuel at the Shell Gas Station on Grant Road just west of Interstate 10 is selling for $3.45, three cents cheaper than Tucson's average of $3.48. "The price of gas I don't regulate it. We make 8 to 10 cents a gallon. Whether I bring it down a couple of cents it doesn't matter. It affects my customers. It affects them at home," said Jim Lamendola the owner.

His son Jimmy put $30 worth of unleaded in his Honda Monday morning, "it's so hard to go shopping after I put gas in my car. It limits me to do what I want to do."

Valerie Vinyard, a spokeswoman for AAA Arizona said the prices are higher than normal because refineries are in the middle of a maintenance period, "and there have been a slew of problems with the refineries; that could be anything from a fire to a power problem you know it could really vary but every problem creates a spike in prices," she said.

AAA Arizona predicts prices will spike later this spring or in the early summer, "supposedly the gas you fill up your tank with on Saint Patricks day is going to cost more than the gas you pay on Memorial Day, " Vinyard said.
