Posted 8:48 AM 6/29/2012 : Will today be the hottest day of the year?
TUCSON - The hottest day of the year so far was 108 degrees back on June 22nd. We'll likely match that the next 48 hours.
High pressure over eastern Arizona cranks up the temps and squashes widespread storm chances, according to News 4 Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. There is a chance for isolated thunderstorms today, south of an Arivaca-Willcox line. Elsewhere, expect mostly sunny skies with a high of 108 in Tucson.
It stays hot over the weekend, as highs top out in the 106-108 range for the metro. Storms this weekend look to stay relegated near the International Border & mountaintops of southern Arizona.
The Monsoon ramps up next week, thanks to increasing moisture and a low pressure trough moving in from Texas. Isolated storms fire up area-wide starting Tuesday, with scattered storms developing for the 4th of July.
