Posted 8:49 AM 8/15/2012 : Mid-August Monsoon madness coming
TUCSON - Goodbye record heat, hello Monsoon boom.
Triggering scattered storms today is ample moisture and an inverted trough over Sonora, according to News 4 Meteorologist Jeff Beamish. The timeframe for these scattered thunderstorms should be anytime after 2 PM this afternoon, lingering through midnight.
Some storms could be severe across southern Arizona, with damaging microburst winds and locally heavy rainfall possible. For that reason, our exclusive Monsoon Prediction Index is set at 6 out of 10 for the moderate risk of severe storms.
The Monsoon stays active again tomorrow as another round of scattered storms is anticipated. Some of these storms Thursday could linger past midnight. Friday appears to be the most active day of the three, with widespread showers & storms. Flash flooding could become a big concern Friday if we see several storms over the next 48 hours.
High temperatures through the weekend hit the mid to upper 90's. Monsoon storms dwindle some heading into next week, with triple digit heat back in the forecast by Tuesday.
